Data Extraction:

The extraction example above is a rarely used custom productivity feature in AutoCAD. It is a documentation method that I have used for many clients. The way it works is  a CAD drawing may be created using attributes that are associated with the block icons found in most CAD drawings. To take advantage of this feature you need to be an advanced AutoCAD user, and do a bit of CAD configuring and external programming to create the one time custom interface tailored to your shop’s needs. In my use I call this customized technique “Smart Drawings”. The method provides storage of project information within the CAD file. Once stored, the the information or data can be extracted to a spreadsheet then optionally be  edited conveniently outside the CAD drawing. The edited updates can then be imported back into the drawing replacing the missing or updated fields as part of the regular drawing process. During project development when progress drawings and work sheets are needed, the embedded data can be extracted to spreadsheets forming equipment lists, run sheets, BTU calculations, and IP addresses, etc. This all can be all stored in the drawing linked to the schematic objects. The huge advantage is not only improvement in productivity, it is also a time and accuracy saver especially when the client inevitably calls for changes in project specification. Traditionally we modify the drawing, then each work sheet is opened individually, and the un-coordinated updates are made to each document, possibly with discrepancies. Using the “Smart Drawing” method, changes are made to the drawing schematic and the fields needing the updates, then it is all saved in one place, the CAD file. Finally, the drawing and document extractions can be rendered to the various project work sheets, perfectly.
